Israelis Sweep Into West Bank on Eve of Trip to U.S. by Sharon
"There is no common denominator for suicide bombers," said the Israeli defense minister, Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, who acknowledged that, as part of his own search for answers, he met last week with two Palestinian militants who were captured on their way to such an attack. "It is a weapon that we cannot defeat."

Still, the government continued its public-relations offensive against Yasir Arafat, using the occasion of Mr. Sharon's planned trip to Washington on Saturday to blame the Palestinian leader once again for failing to stop the attacks.

President Bush echoed those complaints after a meeting at the White House with President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt.

"He needs to cut off terrorist activities," he said of Mr. Arafat.

Mr. Arafat responded in part by pointing again to the newly demolished parts of his headquarters compound, which include a building used by his intelligence service.

The compound was shelled by Israeli tanks during a predawn raid on Thursday in what Israeli officials described as retaliation for the bus attack that killed 17 Israelis and injured 26 near the northern town of Megiddo.
