Under Siege, Fiercely Longing for Peace
"We've been locked up for 35 days and we're sick of it," Mrs. Hazboun said, standing by one of the few working public telephones, near the echoing, stinking market. "The Israelis cut off all the phones. There's no work and no money. We get out an hour or two a day to buy bread."

She threw up her hands. "Who will pay for all of this? Who will fix all the stores, all the streets?"

The Dabdoubs and the Hazbouns are Palestinian Christians. Mrs. Hazboun's son, Johnny, teaches at the Terra Sancta School, near the church. His principal, the Rev. Ibrahim Faltas, a Franciscan, is one of the more than 120 people inside.
