Clinton Sees a Role for G.I.'s in the Middle East
"If there is going to be anything like a lasting settlement, maybe even a temporary settlement, I do believe it will have to be, if not imposed, at least strongly pushed," he said.

"I believe it will require international forces, the Americans, the Europeans, the Russians and others, and I think we ought to show up and do it.

"It'll be much more dangerous for us, because of the bloodshed of the last year and a half," he continued. "Americans, independent of the Israelis, are an attractive target."
But he said that to be acceptable to the Israelis, any international force would need to include peacekeepers from the United States, the only nation Israelis see as truly caring about their fate.

"So there will have to be a global force of some kind, and if President Bush says he's going to be a part of it, I will strongly support it," he said.

"There is no alternative to American involvement," Mr. Clinton said.
