Under Siege, Without Power or Water
In this city, which has been under the sway of Israeli tanks and guns for a week, the water is running out because the electric system that drives the pumps is broken.
In a third of the town, the electricity itself is out. Nearly every car that was parked on the street when the Israelis punched into Ramallah early last Friday has been run over by a tank and flattened. Many of them have been dragged into roadblocks.
Office buildings, restaurants and the buildings that used to house Palestinian national institutions in this city of 160,000 are wrecked.
The once-bustling streets are completely empty, an eerie sight. At intervals, the silence is broken by gunfire or the heavier boom of tank shells. All of the stores are closed and shuttered. Food is running out.
