Jenin Refugee Camp's Dead Can't Be Counted or Claimed
Abdullah Wishahi, 26, said two of those bodies were of his mother and brother, shot in his house by bullets from an Israeli helicopter last Friday.
His mother was hit in the head and his brother in the back, Mr. Wishahi said. No ambulance could reach the house to save their lives, he said. He said that his mother died after about an hour or two, but that his brother held out for eight hours before dying, apparently from internal bleeding.
"After midnight, he stopped breathing," Mr. Wishahi said. He said he remained trapped in the house with the bodies through the weekend.
On Monday, he said, Israeli troops arrived at his home in the camp. "They ordered us to leave the bodies and go outside," he said.
He said he was ordered to strip, apparently to prove he was not carrying a bomb, then permitted to replace only his pants. He said he was forced to lie on his stomach, with his hands behind his back, for six hours. "They kept cursing me and kicking me," he said.…
Mr. Wishahi said he was then taken out of Jenin to a nearby Israeli military base where, he said, he was held blindfolded and shirtless, and denied access to food, water or a bathroom. Similar treatment was described separately by several other Palestinian men. The Israeli army denied mistreating any prisoners.
Mr. Wishahi was asked only his name, his background and the names of his relatives. He was released Wednesday morning, he said. As he left, an Israeli soldier told him that Palestinians were criminals who did not want peace.
"I said, `We are criminals?' " he said. ` "You killed my mother and brother in my house. You destroyed the homes above our heads — and we are criminals?' "
