Israel Starts Leaving 2 Areas, but Will Continue Drive
In defiance of the United States, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on Monday that the Israeli Army would press on with its offensive in the West Bank, but later a senior government official promised that the military would begin withdrawing from two areas.
The areas were identified as Tulkarm and Qalqilya, and the official said Israeli forces would begin to move out by this morning. "These are two places where we have finished the job," the official said.
Even as the withdrawals got under way, Israeli troops and tanks moved into the southern West Bank town of Dora early this morning, the army said. An army spokesman described the move as defensive. Witnesses said gunbattles could be heard.
