OJR article: The Antiwar Movement on the Web

As Congress debated the Bush Administration’s Iraq policy last week, people around the world were demonstrating in opposition to the impending conflict.

If you get your news by reading newspapers and watching television, you won’t find much coverage of the antiwar movement. But on the Web, there’s plenty of evidence of a global grassroots sentiment opposing the war. In fact the Internet’s crucial role in public debates has never been more evident.

The Web is proving to be increasingly important for both interested citizens seeking alternative perspectives, and antiwar activists seeking to mobilize the public.

“When sifting through the mounds of news, information, and PR spin, one should always keep in mind that unconscious bias and deliberate propaganda appear on all sides of the political spectrum.”
