Panel Asserts Reduced Space Station Plans Will Limit Scientific Work
The research review panel, in a report presented today to the NASA Advisory Council, said potentially some of the medical, biological and physical science research that could be conducted at the station would not be possible because of limits on equipment and work time.

Astronauts need a large centrifuge for gravity experiments as well as plant and animal habitats, which are not now provided, the panel said.

In addition, the panel said, when the station grows to include all major American and international scientific modules, by 2007, it will require four shuttle flights a year just to maintain it and to transfer crews and supplies. Without more shuttle flights, there will be no capacity to carry scientific equipment or experiments to and from the station, it said.

If current plans for the International Space Station are not expanded, the panel said, "NASA should cease to characterize the I.S.S. as a science driven program."
